About

Gayle Winegar is the founder and owner of the SweatShop Health Club, which she established in 1981. Her imagination, marketing and leadership skills, and her energy positioned the SweatShop’s place on the leading edge of Pilates, fitness and health and wellness trends. Her overarching objective then and now is to create personalized fitness, a supportive community and a dash of adventure for each client.

Gayle’s appetite athletics, health and fitness springs from her childhood when her athletic and active parents modeled good nutrition and exercise.

After graduating from Macalester College with a degree in anthropology and art history, she was employed in the travel industry, business consulting and restaurant management.

Inspired by the early Jane Fonda workouts, she led aerobics informally to an all-male crew on the deck of a sailboat and to girlfriends on her living room floor, among other sites.

She became trained and certified to teach numerous forms of group fitness including  ACE  group fitness, personal training,  coaching,  Barre, Spinning, Yogafit, Nordic Walking, and TRX.

In addition to directing The Sweatshop, Gayle is a parent, continues to travel internationally every chance she gets, provided support as host parent international college students, served on medical clinic, business association, and alumni boards, and acts as a consultant to other business owners.

Gayle uses humor, dynamism, and creativity to help her thousands of clients discover the joy of being fit, overcome insecurities about their appearance, and live with greater fun and less stress. Her dedication as an industry leader has resulted in more than 5000 fitness and Pilates professionals succeeding in a challenging profession.

She is in demand as a consultant for her creative approaches to problem-solving, marketing and business, her willingness to support other small business owners and her extensive experience in the industry.

She is a devotee of the Spinning program, loves all things Reformer and is waiting for the demand to return to teach mini tramp classes.

About

What led you to the Sweatshop?
I fell in love with Pilates when I took my first class many years ago. My passion for Pilates led me to take the Professional Training in 2017 at the Sweatshop. Having retired from my 30-year career as a high school French teacher, I am now excited to teach Pilates at the Sweatshop so that I can help others benefit from this great form of exercise.

What do you love about the Sweatshop?
So many things! The Sweatshop is a positive and fun place to work and exercise. The staff members and clients are friendly, supportive, committed and knowledgeable. There is something for everyone no matter their fitness level or passion. I especially love the Sweatshop’s focus on Pilates mat and reformer classes, as Pilates is a great form of exercise for improving strength, flexibility, balance, and overall health–in short, a great addition to anyone’s workout routine.

Whats your favorite class to teach?
My true passion is teaching anything on the reformer! One of my goals is to teach more advanced reformer, including Athletic Conditioning, although I love teaching essential reformer, too!

What do you live by?

About

What led you to the Sweatshop?
I came here to exercise, found I liked the community, and decided that even though I had retired recently from my long-time job, joining the staff at the SweatShop would be rewarding and a good outlet for my organizational disposition.

What do you love about the Sweatshop?
I enjoy all of the trainers and other staff, and the variety of people who come in the door to work out. They come with a purpose and are glad when they get here, making most interactions efficient and pleasant – a great combination. I should also say that being new to Minnesota, I pick up lots of useful local knowledge and culture casually while working, and this is fun.

What do you live by?
I live by the Mississippi River. It’s the farthest west I’ve ever lived and I like it. As for principles to live by, you may find as you get older, as I have, that these become not so important. Life principles are aspirational, very helpful while young, but the time comes when aspiration gives way to a settled-in contentment with trying just to do the right thing in each of the various situations that arise. “The right thing” is less about applying some abstract principle and more about trusting life lessons learned from past mistakes.

I found my way to the SweatShop while looking for a Pilates trainer. I knew about the SweatShop’s reputation as the best in town, and after 5 minutes I was hooked. What led you to The SweatShop?
I first took a mat class at the SweatShop with the incomparable Molly Lynn, who studied with Joseph and Clara Pilates in the 1930’s. I was taken with the precision, core strengthening and the depth of the STOTT PILATES® work after living with chronic pain for 18 years. My training with MERRITHEW™ in 1999 was the first hosted professional training courses offered by the SweatShop. I became immersed in the STOTT PILATES® method and philosophy of “Intelligent Exercise, Profound Results.”

About

What led you to The SweatShop?
Taking my first yoga class 24 years ago lead to a life long journey and study of Mind body work.  After many years in the retail art industry I took the plunge for my yoga teaching and a personal training certification.  The effects of working out regularly and doing yoga, changed my life and helped me alter my stressful lifestyle for a healthier and happier one.  When I teach I often think back to my first classes and how much it helped me each  time I attended a class.  My goal has always been  to bring the mindfulness, care and stress reduction to others that I have gratefully received.  Taking my first Pilates training at the Sweatshop opened a new door and was a natural addition to my interests and focus in mind body work.  It has been such a pleasure to part of such a wonderful wellness based community.

What do you love about The SweatShop?
The staff are friendly, committed to work and clients, and I enjoy being part of a group that is so focused on meeting people’s needs.

About

What led you to The SweatShop?
After years of being unhappy with an unhealthy lifestyle, I decided to make changes to my diet and seek a personal trainer in the fitness world. However, I wasn’t having any luck on my journey and was feeling frustrated with my inability to find a fitness lifestyle that I connected with. Thankfully as fate would have it, I was walking past the SweatShop one afternoon when our owner Gayle’s dog jumped up to meet my three-year-old son. We did some talking and I decided to give Pilates a try. The rest is history.

What do you love about The SweatShop?
The community. It’s wonderful how connected the staff is to our clients and the community around us. No one here is just a number. When you join the SweatShop you’re truly gaining a family that is committed to you.

What led you to The SweatShop?
My mom was teaching aerobics when she was pregnant with me, so I’ve been in the fitness world since before I was born! I grew up as a dancer, studying ballet and modern fairly seriously through college. I started doing Pilates after college when I worked customer service at a gym. Knowing I wanted to get into physical therapy, getting a Pilates certification made sense. It has been an awesome complement to my rehab knowledge.

I love the amazing community! The staff and long-time members have literally watched me grow up. I’m so excited to officially be a part of it.

I was planning to attend medical school or become a physical therapist, but as I learned about the STOTT PILATES® method, I realized it was an accessible and effective way to improve people’s health and awareness either preventatively or as rehabilitation.  I moved to Toronto to enroll at the STOTT PILATES® headquarters.
